Gel Base Coat – Adhesion, Leveling and Strength for Every Nail Type

The base coat is the first gel layer on the natural nail and the one that decides how long the whole manicure lasts. It bonds the coating to the nail plate, cushions it against impact and, depending on the product, levels the surface for gel polish or a color base. Choosing the right base for the nails has more effect on wear time than any other step, whether you work in a salon or do your own gel manicure at home. All base coats in this collection are TPO-free and certified for the EU market.

The Two-Phase System: Bonding Base Plus Leveling Base

Many technicians combine two bases. A thin layer of a medium-acid base provides adhesion. Then a low-acid base such as DARK Pro Base Clear or HEYLOVE Clear pH 6.7 levels the nail. This gives strong adhesion without applying an acidic product in a thick layer, and the client feels less heat in the lamp. The same principle works under camouflage bases and hard gels.

Which Base for Which Technique

  • Gel polish on natural nails – a thin rubber base or TOUCH Airy Base is enough.
  • Leveling short to medium nails – a rubber or low-acid base in a leveling layer of up to about 0.7–1 mm.
  • Long, thin or very weak nails – the base serves only as an underlayer. The strength comes from a hard material such as a builder gel or polygel.
  • Gel tip extensions – a thick fixing base such as HEYLOVE Fix Tips or LUNA Fix Base.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which base coat is best for a home gel manicure?

A clear, self-leveling rubber base, for example from HEYLOVE, LUNAmoon, TOUCH or Kodi. It works as a single base layer, is forgiving to apply and suits most natural nails. If your nails are thin or sensitive, choose a low-acid base instead. You'll also need a UV/LED nail lamp.

Can I mix a base coat and gel polish from different brands?

Yes. A one-brand system gives the most predictable results, but most professional bases can be combined with gel polishes from other brands cured in a UV/LED lamp. Formulas differ, so wear time can vary. When you try a new combination, do a test manicure first. If problems appear, go back to a one-brand system.

What is the difference between an acid and an acid-free base?

Medium-acid bases (around pH 4) grip the nail very strongly and are applied only in a thin layer. Low-acid and acid-free bases (around pH 6–7) are gentler, heat up less during curing and can be used for leveling. They suit thin and sensitive nails.

Which base coat is best for thin or sensitive nails?

A low-acid or acid-free base, such as DARK Pro Base Clear, DNKa' Low Acid Base, HEYLOVE Clear pH 6.7 or LUNA Acid Free Base. For brittle, peeling nails, DNKa' Fiber Base adds extra strength.

How thick can the leveling layer be?

With most bases, up to about 0.7–1 mm at the highest point of the nail. For more length or strength, use a hard material over a thin base.

Which base is suitable for pedicure?

A thin, flexible base such as TOUCH Airy Base, DNKa' Multi Base or DNKa' Low Acid Base. For fast pedicures without a separate base, see the 3-in-1 TOUCH SOLO gel polishes.
